And if the diagnosis is different, the treatment should be different too.

This is why a proper hair-loss consultation can be more useful than trying another product on your own.

Why Does Hair Fall in Women Have So Many Different Causes?

Women’s hair is particularly sensitive to changes happening in the body. Pregnancy and childbirth can change the hair-growth cycle. PCOS can be associated with hormonal changes and hair thinning. Significant weight loss, illness or prolonged stress can trigger increased shedding. Thyroid problems and nutritional deficiencies may also need to be considered in the right patient.

Then there is female pattern hair loss, which can be gradual enough that you don’t notice it immediately. You may not suddenly see a bald patch. Instead, you notice small things. Your parting looks a little wider. Your ponytail feels smaller. You can see more scalp under bright light. The front of your hair doesn’t seem as dense as it used to.

You may initially blame your shampoo or the season. But if the change is gradual and persistent, it is worth looking at the actual pattern of hair loss. That is something I look for during a consultation. I don’t just ask, “How much hair are you losing?”

I want to know where you’re losing it, how long it has been happening and what was going on in your life when it started.

Before You Choose a Hair Treatment, Answer These Questions

When I evaluate a woman with hair loss, I look beyond the hair itself.

I usually want to understand:

When did you first notice the problem?

Is your main concern shedding, thinning, or both?

Has your ponytail become thinner?

Is your parting getting wider?

Has your scalp become more visible?

Did the hair fall begin after pregnancy?

Have you recently lost weight?

Have you been unwell or under significant stress?

Do you have PCOS or symptoms that suggest a hormonal issue?

Is there a family history of hair thinning?

Are you taking any regular medication or supplements?

Is your scalp itchy, painful, red or excessively flaky?

Sometimes history itself gives us important clues. Sometimes I need to examine the scalp more closely. Not every woman needs supplements. And not every woman needs a procedure. That is exactly why I prefer to assess first.

Minoxidil: Does It Actually Work for Women?

Minoxidil is one of the medical treatments I may consider for women with certain types of hair loss, particularly female pattern hair loss. But I want to make one thing clear: minoxidil is not a generic “hair fall medicine.” It works best when it is being used for the right indication and used consistently.

Some women may experience increased shedding when they initially start treatment. Scalp irritation can also occur. And pregnancy and breastfeeding are situations where treatment needs particular consideration.

So if someone tells you, “Just start minoxidil, it works for everyone,” I would not follow that advice blindly. The first question is whether your pattern of hair loss is actually one where minoxidil is appropriate.

GFC Hair Treatment: Is It Right for You?

GFC, or Growth Factor Concentrate, is a regenerative treatment that I may consider for selected patients with hair thinning. The simplest way to think about it is that the treatment uses growth-factor-rich components prepared from the patient’s own blood, which are then used in the scalp with the aim of supporting the hair follicles.

But I don’t believe every woman with hair fall automatically needs GFC. The same applies to PRP. These treatments can have a role in a well-planned hair-loss treatment protocol, but the diagnosis should come before the procedure.

If you’re considering this option, you can read more about GFC hair treatment in Delhi.

What About PRP for Women’s Hair Loss?

PRP is another treatment that comes up frequently when women ask me about hair thinning. It involves using platelet-rich plasma prepared from the patient’s own blood and introducing it into the scalp. For the right patient, PRP may be useful as part of a broader treatment plan. In some cases, it may be used alongside medical treatment rather than replacing it.

But I would not recommend choosing PRP simply because somebody you know had a good experience with it. The important questions are: What type of hair loss do you have? How advanced is it? Are the follicles still capable of responding? And what else needs to be addressed? Those answers matter much more than the popularity of a particular procedure.

Hair Fall After Pregnancy: When Should You Worry?

This is one of the most common reasons women come to me after having a baby. A few months after delivery, they suddenly notice hair everywhere, on the pillow, in the shower, on the hairbrush and sometimes even on their clothes.

Postpartum shedding can be a normal response to changes in the hair-growth cycle following pregnancy, and it can gradually settle. But there is an important distinction here. If the shedding continues for longer than expected, the density doesn’t seem to be returning, or you start noticing a widening part or increasing scalp visibility, I would not simply dismiss it as “post-pregnancy hair fall.”

Sometimes postpartum shedding can draw attention to an underlying tendency toward female pattern hair loss that was less obvious before. That’s when a proper examination becomes useful.

Can PCOS Cause Hair Thinning?

It can. Some women with PCOS experience scalp hair thinning because of hormonal and androgen-related factors. But PCOS does not mean that every woman will develop the same type of hair loss. This is why I prefer looking at the complete picture rather than treating a diagnosis in isolation. If you have PCOS along with progressive scalp hair thinning, irregular periods or other hormonal symptoms, mention these during your consultation.

And please don’t start hormonal medication on your own because you’ve read that it may help hair loss. Your hair-loss treatment and hormonal management should be based on your individual medical situation.

What Happens to Hair During Perimenopause and Menopause?

Women often tell me that their hair has become noticeably thinner in their 40s or around menopause. Sometimes the first sign isn’t dramatic shedding. It is simply less hair. The parting becomes more visible. The ponytail loses volume. The crown looks thinner. Hairstyles that once made the hair look full no longer have the same effect.

Hormonal changes can be one factor, but they are not necessarily the only explanation. If you are noticing progressive thinning after 40, I would rather assess it early than tell you that it is simply something you have to live with.

Why Haven’t Hair Oils, Shampoos and Supplements Fixed Your Hair Fall?

If you’ve spent the last year buying anti-hair-fall products, you’re certainly not alone. But here’s the problem: your shampoo doesn’t know why your hair is falling. An oil can condition the hair and make it feel better. A shampoo can help with scalp cleansing and certain scalp concerns. A supplement can be useful if you actually have a deficiency or a medical reason to take it.

But none of these automatically treats every cause of hair loss. This is also why I don’t recommend taking biotin, iron, zinc or multiple “hair vitamins” simply because your hair is falling.

If there is a deficiency, correct it.

If there is female pattern hair loss, treat it appropriately.

If there is a scalp disorder, address the scalp.

If there is a trigger such as significant weight loss or illness, identify and manage that factor. The treatment should follow the reason.

My Approach to Hair Fall Treatment at Influennz Clinic

After more than a decade in dermatology, one thing I have noticed repeatedly is that women often wait quite a while before seeking help. They try home remedies first. Then a shampoo. Then supplements. Then perhaps a friend’s recommendation. By the time they come to a dermatologist, they are not only dealing with hair loss — they are also unsure about what they should believe.

That is why my approach at Influennz Clinic starts with understanding the patient, not with choosing a procedure. I look at the history and pattern of hair loss, examine the scalp, consider relevant medical and hormonal factors and decide whether investigations are needed. Only then do we discuss treatment. Depending on the individual case, this may include medical therapy, GFC, PRP, other regenerative approaches or a combination. And sometimes the right answer is not to do a procedure at all.

That is also a treatment decision. I would much rather tell a patient honestly what she needs — even if it is simpler than what she expected — than recommend something simply because it is available.

If you’re looking for a best hair doctor in Delhi, I encourage you to look for this diagnosis-first approach.

So, When Should You Actually See a Dermatologist?

You don’t need to wait until you have a visibly bald area.
