Photofacial
A lot of factors like the environment and our lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age prematurely. The medical term for premature ageing is ‘extrinsic ageing’. With a few targeted preventative actions, we can definitely slow down the signs of ageing and possibly reverse them too.
What Is Photofacial?
Photofacial is the colloquial term for Intense Pulse Light therapy ( IPL ). This procedure uses a highly energized and computer controlled flashgun that produces broad spectrum pulses of light in the visible spectral range of 400 to 1200 nm. Filters are used to rule out the pulses with lower wavelengths including the potentially damaging UV Light. It targets particular structures and chromophores like oxyhemoglobin and melanin in hair that are destroyed with heat.
This treatment is also used to remove fine hair, treat skin pigmentation, acne, rosacea, and wrinkles.
What Skin Conditions Are Targeted With Photofacial?
- Rosacea
- Stretch marks
- Signs of anti ageing like wrinkles and fine lines
- Skin texture
- Hyperpigmentation
- Signs of sun damage
- Spider veins
- Melasma
- Large and open pores
- Excessive flushing
How Does It Work?
It is a 30 minute treatment, where intense pulses of lights are used to puncture deep into the surface of skin. It causes the blood vessels below the epidermis and collagen to constrict which reduces the redness and signs of ageing.
Pre And Post Treatment Care
It is recommended to stay moisturised and hydrated for at least 7 days before you decide to get the treatment. Certain antibiotics and skincare ingredients found in topical creams are also not recommended before getting the treatment. If you have herpes, you should consult your dermatologist and take the prescribed medication to avoid an outbreak. You shouldn’t be wearing any makeup on the day of the treatment.
There is no downtime to this treatment and you can return back to your routine after it. If you observe any redness, it is normal and it will fade away after a few hours of the treatment. You should avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen at all times.
