What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition that causes grey-brown patches, usually on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. Melasma can be seen on other parts of the body as well that are exposed to the sun like the forearms and neck. Melasma cannot be felt but will just change the appearance of your skin. Melasma can be caused due to various factors like sun exposure, hormones, and genetics.

Melasma Symptoms

Most commonly, Melasma can be seen on the face, although it can also appear on the arms and back. Melasma can usually be seen on the forehead, upper lip, chin, or cheeks. Melasma can also appear as ‘macules’, which resembles freckles, as well as larger dark patches that have irregular borders.

Causes Of Melasma

Melasma is not dangerous or painful but can be extremely troublesome. The exact cause of Melasma is not known but here are a few triggers:

• Internal Factors such as genetics, naturally darker skin, or hormonal changes.
• External Factors include exposure to UV rays, skin inflammation, irritation from certain cosmetics, or certain medications.
